My Journey

Legacy of creativity from 1939. Going back in time and following the footsteps of the first generation of founders in 1939.Before the Indian Independence. Our printing press was founded in 1939 during the pre-Independence era, in a small town called Sivakasi in South India. My grandfather K.C.A.D.Chidambara Nadar and his brother Gnanagiri Nadar were the first to set up a litho printing press in Sivakasi. The printing press was called "The Coronation Litho Works" and registered as a partnership in the year 1939. Both my Grandfathers were great visionaries. Though they did not have a formal education, they managed to innovate and master business skills with ease. They always led fearlessly from the front, embracing new technologies and swiftly adapting to the ever-increasing market demand for printed products. At first, they catered to the print demand from the safety match industries and fireworks industries. Soon, the news of quality printing spread all over India that "Coronation" was printing quality labels at little cost and with prompt deliveries. Very soon, orders were pouring in from all over India, with several print requests. Among those requests, the unforgettable product line, which dominated the markets over four decades, was the printing of calendars with Indian Gods and goddesses themes. Millions of calendar prints adorned the walls of Indian homes. We were rated as one of the best printers in India during this time. My grandfathers not only left behind a rich legacy of the business, the incredible work they contributed to society by founding schools for impoverished girls, has left an indelible mark for ages to come. Developing the industry was their prime motive, but equal importance was given to social causes too. Their focused vision was to help the girl child with education as it was the only way to empower girls in the modern world. These thoughts were put in practice, way before even the Government could initiate schemes for the girl child. This can be seen in their pioneering effort to start an all-girls school called "The Ethel Harvey Girls School", to educate the girl child. The history of the school and its achievements are well documented in the original souvenirs released by the school. On reading it, you could understand the yeomen service they had contributed to building a balanced, educated society. Apart from printing, my grandfathers founded and ran a successful trading company by the name of "KCAD Chidambara Nadar & Co". This Company was formed in the year 1925. The actual business registration was done in the year 1957 as a partnership. The Company's main products traded were cotton, kerosene, paddy, fertilizer, paper and safety match raw materials like glue, wax, and potassium chlorate. The number of firsts from our printing press highlighted in bullet points. ● First to install the Litho press ● First to install Offset press ● First to install Colour scanner ● First to introduce a four colour offset machine ● First to introduce a six colour offset machine ● First to build 50 free houses for staff and workers ● First, to employ cradle to grave policy. (ie. a worker could work with the press as long as he wished; old age was not a bar to retire him from service.) ● First, to install computers in the year 1985. The second generation of entrepreneurs consisting of my father and uncles took the business to even greater heights. New machines were installed, and modern electronic equipment for our printing press introduced to upgrade our printing technology. Among the revolution was the installation of the IBM Computer, with the big 8inch floppy disc. The families with the coming of the third generation had grown in size, and with the mutual consent of all the partners, a business partition was done in the year 1987. My uncles took the original name of "Coronation Litho Works". We named our press "The Coronation Arts Crafts". The premises and machines were shared evenly, without any problems. Till today our town talks about our business partition as an example of perfect give and take policy and maintaining perfect family harmony even during such difficult times. We form the third generation in our family currently looking after the legacy our forefathers created. From the year 1984, I have been actively involved in the marketing of printed products and introducing new products like Comic books, Note Books, Diaries to enhance our printing line. In the year 2012, I retired from our family business and moved to Canada. Among the Inheritance, I received as my share was invaluable "Calendar Paintings ". Here in Canada, I have developed a new style of Comic Books and a Digital Magazine Named "Folk in Focus". Our vision and motto based on the concept of my Grandfathers. We are giving priority to education for a harmonious society. "Education through Comic Books". You can visit our website www.coronationcreative.ca to see our works and download our Magazine "Folk in Focus" free of cost.
